That is the headline number on Picasso-Klee-Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen, which opens at Pérez Art Museum Miami on October 29 and runs through February 28, 2027. Four months. Roughly 100 works. The biggest Picasso show this city will see this year.

What is in Picasso-Klee-Matisse at PAMM

Per PAMM's listing: around 100 works by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti, plus Paul Cézanne and Georges Braque. Painting, watercolor, drawing, sculpture and collage.

The hang is organized by theme rather than chronology, which means you are not walking a timeline. You are walking arguments. Highlights include Picasso's La Lecture (Woman Reading) from 1953 and Klee's Landschaft in Blau from 1917.

Why this Picasso exhibition in Miami matters

The collection has already toured Japan, China, France, Italy and Spain. Its U.S. debut was at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which closed September 13.

Miami's is the largest presentation on the East Coast. And, as Surface noted, it is the first time PAMM has given its biggest galleries to European modernism. That is the quiet story here. A museum with its own bench of Latin American modern masters is clearing its largest rooms for Berlin.

Heinz Berggruen, the refugee who built the collection

Here is the part the poster does not tell you.

Heinz Berggruen was born in Berlin in 1914 to a Jewish family. He wrote for the Frankfurter Zeitung under the initials "H.B." because his surname gave him away, per the Met's research index. He fled Germany in 1936.

He rebuilt in Paris. Tristan Tzara introduced him to Picasso, as the Forward reported, and Berggruen spent five decades buying, much of it directly from the artists themselves.

In 2000 he sold the collection to the German state for $120 million, a figure he called one-tenth its worth. Much of it was work the Nazi regime had condemned as degenerate. He could have placed it in Geneva or London. He chose Berlin, the city that expelled him. Gabriel Montua, director of the Museum Berggruen, has called that choice "a huge act of reconciliation," per the National Gallery of Australia.

Berggruen died in 2007, aged 93.

So when you stop in front of the Klee, know what you are actually looking at. Not a trophy wall. A ledger, settled.

The Miami angle: Rivera, Torres-García, Lam

PAMM is threading its own Latin American modern masters through the show. Diego Rivera. Joaquín Torres-García. Wifredo Lam.

That is the move. It reframes a Berlin collection for a city where European and Latin American modernism belong in the same room. The easy version of this show is to import it and let it sit. PAMM is arguing with it instead.

For four months this winter, the conversation arrives courtesy of a man Berlin expelled in 1936, who spent five decades assembling a collection that included a great deal of what the Nazi regime had condemned as degenerate, then sold it to that same country for what he called one-tenth its worth.
